Online Zoom Classes – Nov & Dec, 2026

Nov 3 - ice-covered stones

Walking along the shoreline in late fall you will find stones coated with ice. I thought this would be an interesting topic to demonstrate. It is a little study in abstract forms. I will be using a 12x9 canvas with a magenta tonal wash. Many blues such as ultramarine blue, cobalt blue and cerulean blue will be used to create my greys and earth tones. Titanium white or warm white are possible choices for the highlights.

Nov 10 - Fall in Almonte, on

It is very difficult to walk by water cascading over Canadian shield rocks in the autumn and not take notice. I like the variety of colour, moving water and the rock formations. This scene reminds me of something A.Y. Jackson would have been drawn to paint. I will begin with a yellow tonal wash on my canvas, then layout the position of the cascading water over rocks. The fun part begins with depositing lots of colour in the background to develop those autumn trees.

nov 17 - the first snow

I absolutely love the first snow of the season. On this particular morning in the canyon, there was a mist in the air and as the sun streamed through the mist, this was just one of those magical moments. Some of the trees were glistening droplets as the snow was melting off the branches. Capturing the mood of the moment will involve some glazing with transparent white. The trick is to develop the under painting first, then add the glazing.

nov 24 - lundbreck falls, ab

A little off the main road on a cross-country adventure, we discovered this waterfall and what an incredible sight. It was by chance; I noticed a small sign indicating a waterfall, we decided to check it out. What a surprise. It was like seeing a mini–Niagara Falls! I look forward to demonstrating this scene. Develop all the shadow colours of the water before you add white. I’ll show you how that is done.

dec 1 - winter christmas ball

I love hanging Christmas balls in the trees around my yard. It adds a little colour to the neighbourhood. I like this particular ball because of the gold band design. Luckily there is a hint of light hitting the ball. This gives it a little sparkle. Capturing that light fluffy snow will be the challenge in this little scene.

dec 8 - big white ski resort night scene

This class might inspire a mountain vacation at Big White. A number of years ago we were there for Christmas. My granddaughter and I were walking around the village enjoying the lights. The skis left on the fence line spoke to me as a possible painting one day. Well, that day has arrived. There is a lot happening in the reference. How do you minimize it without losing its spirit?

DEC 15 - CHRISTMAS TREE

It has been years since we have gone out to cut a Christmas tree. The way I look at it now, there are tree farms who have cut their trees for the market, so I might as well buy one of those and leave a tree in the forest. I love having a fresh tree in our home. Once the Christmas season is over, I prop it up in the yard for the birds to enjoy while they wait their turn at the birdfeeder. This lovely Christmas tree I admired as we snowshoed by. Happy Holidays!

Hope to see you all back here January 12, 2027
